The Present Perfect Continuous has two ways to be used. It indicates a continuous action that has been finished at some point in the past or that was initiated in the past and continues to happen. / O Presente Perfeito Contínuo possui duas maneiras de ser utilizado. Ele indica uma ação que se finalizou em algum tempo no passado ou uma ação que se iniciou no passado e que continua acontecendo.

Veja como o “ Present Perfect Continuous” é formado:

Subject + the present perfect of the verb 'to be'(have/has been) + the present participle of the main verb (base+ing)

Sujeito + presente perfeito do verbo to be + presente do particípio do verbo principal

Examples: / Exemplos:

He has been walking. / Ele tem andado.
You have been sleeping. / Você tem dormido.
You haven't been dancing with her. / Você não tem dançado com ela.
Have you waiting for a long time? / Você tem esperado por muito tempo?

Let's see the uses of present perfect continuous: / Vamos ver os usos do presente perfeito contínuo:

#1 Some action that started in the past and continue until now:
#1 Alguma ação que se iniciou no passado e que continua até o momento.

Some examples of expressions that can be use in this case of the PPC are: /Alguns exemplos de expressões que podem ser usadas nesse caso são:

For ten minutes. / Por dez minutos.
For one hour. / Por uma hora.
Since Monday. / Desde segunda.
Since Saturday. Desde sábado.

Examples: / Exemplos:

  • My mother has been waiting for five hours. (and she's still waiting now)
    Minha mãe está esperando por cinco horas. (e ela continua esperando agora)

  • They have been working on this book since six o'clock this morning. (= and they still working on it now).
    Ele estão trabalhando nesse livro desde as seis horas da manhã. (e eles ainda estão trabalhando nele agora)

  • My family have been camping since last July. (and they're not home yet).
    Minha família está acampando desde julho. (e eles ainda não voltaram para casa).

Others Examples:

  • I have been singing for the last hour. /
    Estou cantando há uma hora.

  • Your brother has been working at Brasil Escola for five years. /
    Seu irmão trabalha no Brasil Escola há cinco anos.

  • What have you been doing since morning? /
    O que você está fazendo desde a manhã?

  • I have been teaching at that school since August.
    Eu estou dando aulas naquela escola desde agosto.

  • We have been waiting here since morning.
    Nós estamos esperando aqui desde a manhã.

#2 Some action that have just finished recently.
#2 Alguma ação que acabou de terminar recentemente.

We can also use the Present Perfect Continuous to show an action without saying the exactly duration of it. We use the PPC with a general meaning of lately. / Nós também podemos usar o Presente Perfeito Contínuo para mostrar uma ação sem sua exata duração. Usamos o PPC com um significado geral de ultimamente.

Some examples of expressions that can be use in this case of the PPC are: / Alguns exemplos de expressões que podem ser usadas nesse caso são:

For weeks / Por semanas
Lately / Ultimamente
Recently / Recentemente
Just now / Agorinha / Agora mesmo

Examples: / Exemplos:

  • I've been cooking for you since last night (and the food looks amazing).
    Eu estou cozinhando para você desde noite passada. (e a comida parece maravilhosa).

  • She has been cleaning the house. (and the floor is still wet).
    Ela tem limpado a casa. (e o chão ainda está molhado).

  • Someone has been drinking my Coke. (much of them have gone)
    Alguém está bebendo minha coca. (boa parte dela se foi)

Others examples: / Outros exemplos:

  • Recently, she have been feeling very happy!
    Recentemente, ela está sentindo-se feliz!

  • They have been playing too much video game lately.
    Eles estão jogando muito videogame ultimamente.

  • Have you been reading lately?
    Você está lendo ultimamente?

  • My mother has been feeling a little stressed.
    Minha mãe está sentindo-se um pouco estressada.

  • You haven't been working for weeks.
    Você não está trabalhando há semanas.
